Goldfinch really seem to love the seeds of Crape Myrtle. We used to get what seemed like hundreds in our trees at home. They would make a loud clattering sound as they pecked at the seed pods to get to the tiny wafer-like seeds within. The only thing they seemed to like better is thistle seeds.
When the Goldfinch appeared in early January I would hang “socks” filled with thistle seed in the Crape Myrtle. The pods were soon forgotten as the tiny birds fought for their spot on the sock to pull the seeds through the netting.
This Goldfinch was just a random bird I saw out on a walk during a break at work.
